Biography

Dr. Francine G Smith is a tenured, full-Professor, in the Department of Physiology & Pharmacology at the University of Calgary, she has been continuously funded throughout my independent research career. She has published more than sixty peer-reviewed articles, 12 book chapters and reviews, and more than 130 abstracts. The major thrust of her research program is to explore the physiology of the newborn kidney and the neurohumoral factors that modulate kidney function during the critical adaptation to life after birth. They are investigating putative mechanisms that may regulate body fluid homeostasis during the perinatal period and throughout maturation.

Research Interest

Dr. Francine G Smith research intersts include parameters of cardiovascular function (e.g. arterial baroreflex), renal function (e.g. glomerular filtration rate, clearances, reabsorptions) and endocrine function (e.g. plasma renin activity, arginine vasopressin), as well as responses to perturbations in vascular volume or blood pressure (e.g. haemorrhage, furosemide). The experiments in integrative physiology are conducted in conscious, chronically instrumented sheep at different stages of development.
