Dialysis: A Review of the Mechanisms Behind Complications in Chronic Renal Failure Management

Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) is the most common public health condition affecting the elderly globally. A damaged kidney is the most common cause of CRF. CRF is classified into five stages depending on Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR), with stage 5 (GFR 15 ml/min/1.73m2) being referred to as End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). Because of the decreased renal function, toxins and extra water accumulate in CRF. Dialysis is the most effective treatment for ESRD and the removal of toxins from the body. The risk of cardiovascular disease linked with dialysis is 10 to 20 times higher in dialysis patients than in healthy persons.
