Biography

Matthew O. Howard, Ph.D., Daniels Distinguished Professor at the School of Social Work at UNC-Chapel Hill has published more than 200 articles in the mental health and substance abuse areas. His three grants from the National Institute on Drug Abuse have focused on neuropsychiatric impairments in adolescent and adult volatile solvent and MDMA users. He currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of Social Work Research, was recently appointed North American Editor of the British Journal of Social Work, and was formerly editor of the Journal of Social Services Research. Dr. Howard has won numerous awards for his excellence in teaching and trained more than 2000 master’s level social workers. Prior to entering academia, Dr. Howard worked for ten years as a psychiatric social worker employed in state psychiatric hospital, veterans affairs, and residential alcohol dependence and child and adolescent mental health treatment settings.
