Biography

Dr Omar is currently the College of American Pathologists’ KY State Commissioner for Lab Accreditation and had served for several years as a member of the CAP-Accreditation education Committee. He has been the Chief of Path & Lab Medicine Service at the Louisville VA Med Center since 1993 and a tenured Professor of Pathology & Lab Medicine at the Univ of Louisville Med Schl since 1997. Dr Omar obtained his MD degree in 1977 from the Med Academy of Sofia, Bulgaria. He combined his residency training in Anatomic and Clinical pathology with graduate education in Experimental Pathology at SUNY-Downstate Med Center, NY, between 1978-1983 that culminated with a PhD degree in Experimental Pathology and Board certification in Pathology (AP/CP). After graduation, Dr Omar held the positions of Instructor then Assistant Professor at NY Medical College in Valhalla, NY, from 1983-1990; Associate Professor at West Virginia University Med Schl in Morgantown, from 1990-93 and Associate Professor then Professor at the Univ of Louisville from 1993 to present. Throughout his career, Dr Omar has been teaching medical students and pathology residents, practicing diagnostic Anatomic and Molecular Pathology and conducting biomedical research in the area of cellular stress as it applies to human cytodegenerative (e.g., neurodegenerative) disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. He has numerous publications in this field.
