Nasopalatine duct cyst (NPDC) is the most common developmental, epithelial non-odontogenic cyst in the oral cavity. A developmental cyst, NPDC is believed to arise from epithelial remnants of the nasopalatine duct, the communication between the nasal cavity and anterior maxilla in the developing fetus. Radiographically, NPDCs are usually well-circumscribed radiolucencies of the anterior maxilla. Patients may be asymptomatic, with the lesion being detected on routine radiographs. But the definite diagnosis should be based on clinical, radiological and histopathologic evaluation. The purpose of this presentation is to present the importance of cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT) to detect NPDC. Orthopantomographic view isn?t always as clear as to detect nasopalatine duct cyst.
Cagrı Akcay graduated from Istanbul University Faculty of Dentistry in 2012. He then joined the PhD program of Istanbul University, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is still a PhD student in Istanbul University and keeps making researches in surgical dentistry. He is a member of Turkish Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (TAOMS), Turkish Dental Association (TDA) and World Dental Federation (FDI).
