Not many people realize the amount of research that underpins cosmetic products. New product development can take years to ensure they meet the needs of the consumers to enhance appearance and well-being. Cosmetic Science represents a highly diversified field involving many disciplines of science and art. The total process of developing and commercializing cosmetic products involves people with diverse backgrounds and experience. It covers the development/selection of raw materials, manufacturing of formulations taking into consideration aesthetic and sensory aspects, sophisticated testing methods for safety, efficacy and clinical evaluations, claims substantiation and successful branding and marketing. Cosmetic formulations are becoming more complex and manufacturers should not only address the sensory aspects that consumers desire but also maximize the performance of the formulation by maintaining the integrity of the raw materials and ensuring maximum bioavailability at the target site. Healthcare professionals (e.g. aesthetic physicians, dermatologists, pharmacists, aesthetic/beauty therapists) and consumers are looking for more cost-effective non-invasive methods, such as the use of cosmetic products, to improve the appearance of skin and hair issues. This presentation will give an overview of Cosmetic Science???s wider relevance for healthcare professionals.
