Abstract :

Diabetic nephropathy is the most important microvascular complication among type 2 diabetic patients. Oxidative stress plays a major role in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy. The present study investigated the combined effect of Emblica officialise (EO) with Pioglitazone in type II diabetes induced nephropathy. Diabetes was induced in male Sprague-Dawley rats with high fat diet fed/low dose STZ injection which induced changes in the renal histopathology with concurrent decrease in antioxidative enzymes. Altered lipid profile, elevated blood glucose level, serumcreatinine, blood urea nitrogen, proteinuria was observed in diabetic control. Group I received normal pellet diet (control), group II served as diabetic control and groups III to V were treated with EO alone, Pioglitazone alone, EO plus Pioglitazone respectively. Treatment schedule was started one day before STZ injection. Treatment with combination of EO and Pioglitazone significantly attenuated the renal dysfunction when compared with groups treated alone. The beneficial effect of this combination can be attributed to the amelioration of oxidative stress induced changes in diabetic renal structure.
