Non-traumatic amputation of the lower limb is associated with an high risk of mortality in the 1st year. Despite the tendency to decrease this intervention with the evolution of vascular surgery, it remains prevalent due to the high incidence of Arterial Insufficiency (AI) and Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Major amputation is associated with a 30 days mortality of up to 22% and 44% at the first year on the other hand, if the amputation is minor, these values decrease to about an half. In this context, there has also been a tendency to perform minor amputations as opposed to major ones. The objectives of this study were to identify and evaluate the main risk factors and survival of patients undergoing amputation at our hospital between 2010 and 2015.
Alexandra Maria Santos Soares has completed her PhD from Beira Interior University, Portugal and Postdoctoral studies from Hospital Amato Lusitano-Castelo Branco.She is in the 3rd year Resident of General Surgery at Hospital Amato Lusitano.
