Objective: Nosocomial infections occur worldwide. Infections acquired in health institutions are among the main causes of death and lead to increased morbidity in hospitalized patients. In this study, we aim to determine the surgical nosocomial infections of the surgical service in intensive therapy Hospital Center “Mother Teresa “ in Tirana. Method: In this study, 680 patients admitted to the intensive therapy Hospital Center “Mother Teresa “ in Tirana, during the period September 2021 - June 2022. Results: 680 patients were included in this study, of which 70 patients resulted in nosocomial hospital infections. The study was conducted from September 2021 to June 2022. All patients were clinically examined. A total of 13% blood cultures, 36.7% wound samples, 30% intubation tubes, 6.7% aspiration tubes, 16.7% throat secretion cultures and 40% urine cultures were performed. The data were collected from patients who had a temperature 48 hours after admission to intensive care. The overall percentage of surgical nosocomial infection was 41% in relation to other nosocomial infections. The percentage of nosocomial infection was higher in men (66%) than in women (34%). The average age of these patients with surgical nosocomial infections was 60.82 years and the main cause of these infections was Staphylococcus Aureus in 38% of cases. Conclusions: Nosocomial infections are common in patients admitted to the intensive therapy Hospital Center “Mother Teresa “ in Tirana. More studies are needed to plan long-term strategies for the prevention and management of surgical nosocomial infections.
