Oral cancer: A retrospective review of pattern and outcome

Abstract :

Recent study was conducted on 257 patients of oral cancer from Dhaka Dental College & Hospital and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University. It was found that the patients those who had the habit of accumulation of smokeless tobacco with betel leaf leave and areca nut on the right side of the buccal mucosa, among these 1 17 patients were having squamous cell carcinoma on their right cheek. The percentage of female patient is 14.53% and male patient is 31.53 %. On the other hand out of 257 patients 78 (62% male and female is 16%) patients were suffering from left sided maxillary carcinoma .These patients usually smokes using their right hand. In this sub-continent most of the male have the tendency of smoking tobacco and female have the habit of smokeless tobacco with betel leaf and areca nut chewing. In this study estimates were made of effective size and precision since these presented in original study. Separate meta- analyses were carried out for patients those who had the habit of having smokeless tobacco with betel leaf and areca nut and tobacco smokers. For this, sort of patients sensitivity analysis for smokers/ nonsmokers were carried out. Oral cancer is often detected at a late stage when treatment is debilitating and the chances of survival rate are poor. Certain ethnic and poor socio-economic groups are at elevated risk of oral cancer due their ignorance and frequency of risk factor. Awareness and early detection is necessary to prevent oral cancer.

Biography :

Shohda khatun completed her Bachelor of Dental Surgery Degree (BDS) in 1981 from Dhaka University and did training on General Surgery and ENT for one year. She obtained her MCPS Degree in Dental surgery from Bangladesh College of Physicians and surgeons and Masters of surgery Degree (MS in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) in 2008, from Dhaka University. She conducted 31 years of Service in the respective department .She has been working as Senior Consultant at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University from the year 2009-Till date. She has 12 Original research articles, published in different recognized medical journals.
