Relationship between Apgar score with intraventricular hemorrhage in infants born weighing less than 1500grams

Abstract :

Introduction: Intraventricular hemorrhage is one of the most important complications in preterm and low birth weight infants. Prompt diagnosis and treatment of this complication has a significant effect on patients' prognosis and outcome. This study was conducted to determine the frequency of IVH in infants weighing less than 1500 grams to assist physicians in making rational decisions. Materials and Methods: Newborns weighing less than 1500 grams (60% male and 40% female and the mean gestational age 100 at the time of birth was 30.5 +2.5 weeks) were included in this descriptive-analytical study who were born in 2019-2020 period at Milad Hospital. Results: According to the results of ultrasound on the first 3 days of birth, 8% of neonates reported intraventricular bleeding and the most common type of bleeding was grade I. There was a significant relationship between Apgar at birth and birth weight with IVH incidence. Conclusion: Based on the findings of our study, which was conducted on infant’s under1500 gr, 8% of infants had IVH, but there was no significant relationship between gestational age and IVH incidence, but there was a significant relationship between low Apgar score at birth and birth weight with IVH incidence.

Seyed Saied Nabavi is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Tehran Medical Sciences Islamic Azad University, Tehran, Iran. He completed his PhD at the age of 26 years from Azad Tehran University and completed his speciality in pediatrics from Zanjan University in Iran and he has been working In NICU ward at Milad Hospital in Tehran for 20 years.
