Abstract :

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia and is one of the most common systemic diseases in the world with increasing prevalence. While the retinal complications of diabetes are well recognized by eye care professionals, the effects on the ocular surface are not as well understood and the evolving management option trends are changing. The presentation will: (1) Comprehend the prevalence and future direction of diabetes and diabetic retinopathy, appreciate the ???Untold truths??? of patients living with diabetes, (2) Recognize risk factors for the development of diabetic retinopathy and eye related complications, (3) Understand the growing role of optometrists in collaborating with health practitioners and specialists to minimize risk of eye related complications and (4) Better understand the rising eye related management options available and the significant role of optometrists in contributing to the decision making process.
