Before drugs are licensed for use in patients, they must go through a rigorous series of clinical trials designed to determine efficacy and safety. Requirement of licensing of drugs is a rigorous programme of post-licensing pharmacovigilance. Pharmaceutical companies are required to continue to monitor the safety of their drugs once they are on the market.
