Cosmetic Camouflage : Its safety and efficacy in the treatment of Vitiligo

Abstract :

Melanin is the pigment that determines colour of skin, hair and eyes. If melanocytes cannot form melanin or decreases skin colour becomes progressively lighter. The cause of vitiligo is not known sometimes follows physical injury, sunburn or emotional stress. This study indicate vitiligo have significant effects on the age of onset of disease. Females suffer > males with an average (meanSD) age of onset 29.8214.44 years, maximum being in age range of 6-10 and 36-40 years. Early onset is affected by both genetic backgrounds and common environmental factors especially for universalis vitiligo and mucosal subtypes. The quality of life impairment with profound psychological and social effects, a disfiguring skin disease on sufferers affecting at least 1% of population. Main objectives of patient-oriented care and improvement of quality of life is related to patients satisfaction with care, have positive effect on treatment adherence and outcome. Cosmetic Camouflage lessen contrast between the lesions and pigmented normal skin during UV therapy and recommended when patients are not motivated to treat their disease or when therapy does not achieve expected results. By using Dermatology Life Quality Index(DLQI) as outcome measure Cosmetic camouflage improves quality of life in various skin diseases. 22% of patients experienced situation of rejection.The unanimous response to utility question proposing choice between 1year salary and cure of their disease is striking, 99% choose a cure. Camauflage can be recommented in patients with higher DLQI scores or self-assessed disease severity score. Patients with minor involvement of face benefit from Cosmetic camouflage.

Lalchamliani khiangte has completed MBBS from Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi. MD Biochemistry from Regional Institute of Medical Sciences. Worked in HIV field as ART MO, finished ICU &ICCU course both in paediatrics and adult from N.Delhi. Established her own ZO DRIM (Zo Diagnostic Research Institute and Medicare) and Zo Diagnostic where many researches are being carried out.
